Minimalist aesthetic in art and design

I love these old ads for BMW, read an article in the Sunday times yesterday entitled "Design Loves a Depression" got me thinking about positive affects of an economic downturn on both art and design. These cars are a result of BMW's design, post World War II during some of Germany's hardest years. I love the clean simplicity, nothing there but what works. They're obviously in true Bauhaus aesthetic breaking things down to form following function. Hopefully our current economic downturn will inspire a similar minimalist approach.

In art as in design a unified vision is more appealing than a collection of parts.

  2. I thought that Times article was interesting too. Maybe this recession will weed out some of the more self-conscious design-y stuff, and bring back good old utilitarian simplicity.
