Goodbye John Updike

I've never read anything by John Updike, but there was something comfortable in knowing he existed. Very few writers or artists can equal or create the same feeling as those who have recently passed ie Updike, Wyeth, Newman, Rauschenburg... who will be their replacement, I haven't seen them yet, perhaps they're still in their infancy?

Oh, how sad. He has a great book on art called "Just Looking". What an American treasure.

It is odd, isn't it? I've never read any of his work either, but it makes me feel so uncertain of what the cultural landscape of the world will look like as we age--I know just what you mean by 'who will take his place'.
