Love these illustrations by ward_zwart capturing the highlights of European Countries. The UK is perfect for today what with Wimbledon on while I write this... Watching Safina blow her Russian cool (and that gut muscle that keeps popping out of her shirt- what is that?!)

Hate your job? Some insights into reasons why...

Knew this all along, now there's proof. Two new summer reads, Alain de Button's The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work and Matthew B. Crawford's Shop Class as Soulcraft. Detailed investigations that more thoroughly explain your uneasy feelings regarding your work experience. Damn you Home Depot!

Heidi Howard

snowstavern1818.jpg

Stumbled across Heidi's work after watching Antiques Roadshow and being inspired by Antique Inn and Tavern Signs of Connecticut. She makes these fantastic reproductions! Love the snowy owl. Plus she's a RISD Grad yip yip! See more of her work here.

Putting the final touches on our manuscript, armed only with a how to book and list of publishers names eek! Ran into David McCullough at the Bunch of Grapes bookstore yesterday, kicking myself for not saying hi! Send a little bit of luck our way!

Meet Suug & Puud

Suug, originally uploaded by jamieshelman.

Dynamic duo Suug and Puud (short for Sugar and Puddin)
Suug is obviously the darling of the family and Puud may be a bit of a trouble maker (don't be fooled by that cute fat baby seal look, he's always got one eye open...) Find them both in my shop over here!

The Russian Bridesmaid

Russian Bridesmaid, originally uploaded by jamieshelman.

Lara Match

Me photographing Tom's latest fashion portraits! I've been updating Tom's website with his latest work! Check it out here
The top one reminds me of the Nabokov short story The Russian Beauty (such tragic elegance!) And I love the little detail of the red tipped match in the second portrait of Lara. I always love the abstract play of shape and color in Tom's work, especially in these latest portraits which are so delicate in touch and so refined in their mastery of narrative and form. The shape of the hair or the way a color, such as that wash of black, can anchor and yet float the figure off the page is as telling as the recognition of the face itself.

Salt Spray Rose

The salt spray roses are finally in bloom out here on the Vineyard and they smell divine! I love how they grow right by the dunes on the beach. Everytime we walk by I breathe in deep. I wonder if the red wing black birds that live nearby are as taken with the perfume as I am? !

Hmstrjam's Movie Haus Selections

Bright Star (2009) by YES, we like MOVIES !.
Jane Campion's film Bright Star is a sensual feast that explores the life of poet John Keats and his unrequited love affair with Fanny Braun in 19th century England. It incorporates his spoken poetry, the English countryside and themes of love, loss, and exuberance for life!
Assignment 1: For this first week's assignment we'll explore the 5 senses touch, taste, sight, sound and smell using specific compositions from the film (which we'll capture using a camera) to discover how they can be visually expressed and explored effectively in your own work.

Babette's Feast(芭比的盛宴)-001 by Taro Wang.
A Danish film by director Gabriel Axel based on the story by Isak Dinesen (who also wrote Out of Africa). A French chef aids a pair of religious Danish sisters in a remote town and with a twist of fate brings about a sensual spiritual awakening which had been previously denied.
Assignment 2: For this assignment we'll deal with the theme of sparsity vs. opulence and recall examples from our own lives that mirror a similar experience.

Directed by Phillip Stolzl and based on a true story this film portrays 2 Bavarian climbers attempt to be the first to scale the North Face of the Eiger during the beginnings of Hitler's rise to power.
Assignment 3: For this weeks assignment we'll recall personal fears or metaphoric mountains we've attempted to climb and either succeeded or failed and how we can illustrate this in our work. We'll look at specific examples of moutaineering based art as well as artist who illustrate fears from their own lives.

http://www.theluxechronicles.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/05/22/priceless2_largepreview.jpg

Directed by Pierre Salvador and starring Audrey Tautou (of Amelie!) set in Monaco, "through a set of wacky circumstances, a young gold digger mistakenly woos a mild-mannered bartender thinking he's a wealthy suitor"
Assignment 4: For this assignment we'll use an actual still image from the movie and use collage to alter, edit and change the image to say something new and explore events/themes that occur in the film. We'll look at collage artists as examples and sources of inspiration.
